I must say Dragon Quest VIII was actually a big disappointment - instead of a macho hero like Chrono from Chrono Trigger you get a timid and shy boy.
I stomached DQ8 as long as I could, but when it got to the part where Yangus started a bar fight and the hero WATCHED AND SAT THERE while his friends got their ass beat?
I tossed the game in the garbage..
No true hero sits there and watches their friends get beat up. That's something Chrono would never let happen. He'd have jumped in and helped Yangus!
